Pegging: what the word means, where it came from, and how it is written

Pegging is a woman penetrating a man, usually with a strap-on. That is the whole definition of the act, and it is also the least interesting thing about it. What makes it a kink rather than a mechanic is the reversal: the man is the one being done to, and both of them notice.

The word was invented by readers

It is one of the very few sexual terms with a documented birthday. An American sex advice column ran a reader poll to name the act because there was no common word for it, and the winning suggestion was pegging. That is where it came from, and it is why the word feels newer than the thing.

The origin matters more than it looks. A term chosen by the people doing it, rather than one inherited from medicine or from insult, tends to be neutral, and this one is. There is no sneer built into it.

Why it is a dynamic and not an act

Mechanically it is straightforward. What people are actually after is the inversion.

Most sexual scripts hand one role to men by default. Pegging takes that role and gives it to her, and does it visibly. The charge is in the reversal itself, in being on the receiving end of something, and in having asked for it.

That is why a scene written as pure logistics falls flat. Nothing about the equipment is interesting. The interesting part is a man asking for it out loud and a woman deciding how she is going to answer.

What it has to do with femdom

It sits next to femdom and it is not the same thing.

Femdom is about authority. Pegging is about a reversal that often comes with authority attached, but does not have to. Plenty of it happens between people with no dynamic at all, as something one of them wanted to try and the other was curious about. Written that way it is warm rather than commanding, and that version is badly under-served.

The overlap exists because both put a woman in a position the default script does not, and because the two often turn up in the same story. They are still separate choices, and treating them as one produces a scene where she is stern for no reason.

Is pegging gay?

No, and the question is asked often enough to be worth answering plainly. It involves a man and a woman. What sits behind the question is usually an assumption that being penetrated is a role rather than a sensation, which is exactly the assumption the whole thing is playing with.

How it is written, when it works

The asking is the scene

Whatever happens afterwards, the moment someone has to say it out loud is the best material in the story. It is difficult to say, it is revealing, and it can go several ways. Skipping it to get to the act throws away the reason the act means anything.

She has to want it, not just permit it

The most common flaw is a woman who is accommodating. If she is only going along with it, the reversal has not happened: he is still directing. She should want something specific from it.

It is not a punishment

Written as humiliation by default, it stops being about desire. It can be humiliation if both of them want that, but the automatic version is lazy and it is the version most bad writing reaches for.

Afterwards is part of it

Something has been rearranged between them, and the story should say what. A scene that ends at the finish has skipped its last movement.

An example

He had rehearsed it in the car, which she found out later and did not tease him about.

What he actually said was, "I want to ask you for something and I would rather do it badly than not at all."

"Then do it badly," she said, and put her book down, and waited, and did not help him once.

Example. Generated for this page as a sample. It is not taken from anyone's story.

Where it goes wrong

It is all equipment. Two paragraphs of hardware and nothing about either of them.

She is a service provider. Doing him a favour rather than wanting it, which removes the entire reversal.

It is automatically degrading. Reached for as a default rather than chosen by two people who wanted it.

He is embarrassed and never stops being. Embarrassment is a good opening and a bad whole story.

Nothing changes. If the two of them are exactly as they were before, the story did not need this in it.

Does pegging require a dynamic?

No. It works inside a power exchange and it works between equals who were curious. The second version is rarer in fiction and is often the better story, because the negotiation is between two people with no established roles to fall back on.

Is pegging the same as femdom?

No. Femdom is about who holds authority; pegging is a specific reversal that can happen with or without it. They co-occur often, which is why they are so often confused.

What is the appeal?

Two things, usually. Being on the receiving end of something, which is a sensation and a position rather than an identity. And the fact of having asked, which is a different pleasure and often the larger one.

The part fiction does better than the conversation

The genuinely difficult part of this one is the asking, and in a story the asking is the good bit rather than the obstacle. You can read the version where it goes well before you have to find out how it goes.

Written to order, say whether there is a dynamic or not, and say whether the asking is early or late. Those two choices produce four quite different books out of the same two people.

The femdom page is the version with authority attached, which is the most common pairing.

The entry on power exchange is what is actually being traded when there is a dynamic.

The entry on negotiation and limits is the asking, treated as the scene it is.

The entry on aftercare is the last movement, and the one most often left out.

The guide to what BDSM stands for puts the dynamic side in its region, if the words are new.

Privacy, since this one is specific

What you ask for here is more particular than a genre preference. Your stories are encrypted at rest. We can read them to write them. Nobody else can read them. The privacy guide sets out what that covers and what it does not.

Every character in a sexual context is an adult. That one is not a setting.

Neither of them in charge

No dynamic, no roles to fall back on, and two adults working it out between them. Warm rather than commanding, and the negotiation is most of the story.

The version with authority attached. He asked, she said yes, and then she set the terms. Not unkind and not a punishment, and entirely on her schedule.

A story that is almost entirely the asking. Three attempts, two of them abandoned, and a partner who does not help him get there and does not need to be persuaded either.
